Conference News

The conference will take place over two days, with a third day of community service. Features of the conference program include:

  • Four keynote sessions with global and national speakers in conversation with leading journalists, introduced by students
  • Panels with national and local leaders in collaborative conversation about challenges and solutions to a variety of issues including:  private sector innovation;  environmental justice and health; grassroots community action for greenspace access; and Drawdown Georgia’s implementation strategy.
  • “Solution Sessions” will co-facilitated by Agnes Scott students along with experienced leaders in the fields of business, education, technology, advocacy, and government.
  • A showcase of student projects that identify and address issues related to women and climate change, open to metro-Atlanta college and universities as well as Decatur public schools
  • An art exhibit and other events to highlight the interaction between art and problem solving
  • Campus tours highlighting the work at Agnes Scott to reach carbon neutrality by 2037, detailing the efforts thus far resulting 30% reduction of the campus carbon footprint 
  • Networking for all attendees, highlighting professional development for students
  • Receptions to celebrate the work of climate justice leadership
  • Opportunities to highlight the work of partners and sponsors

Agnes Scott College announces the keynote speakers of the morning session on day two of the Building a Better World:  Women and Climate Justice conference, taking place September 23-24, 2021. The All We Can Save Project co-founder, Katharine Wilkinson, will lead a conversation with three young voices  – Seva Gandhi, Leah Trotman, and Wanjiku “Wawa” Gatheru – exploring the analysis of climate impacts along with future solutions that are possible for women leaders around the world.

Agnes Scott is announcing another exciting keynote speaker in the lineup for day two of the Building a Better World:  Women and Climate Justice conference, taking place September 23-24, 2021. Dr. Cecilia Martinez will bring the most recent news about national climate leadership from Washington, DC. – including her firsthand report on the recommendations recently submitted by the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council.

Advancing from Analysis to Action: The Drawdown Georgia Initiative

First Panel Session

Drawdown Georgia is a statewide initiative focused on scaling market-ready, high-impact climate solutions in Georgia this decade. It provides a roadmap of 20 solutions that can advance not just decarbonization, but other societal priorities, including equity, public health, economic development, and the larger environment. Panelists will explore how they are working to equitably scale solutions, including reducing food waste, increasing energy efficiency in homes and houses of worship, and growing rooftop solar- efforts that both reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lift up communities in our state.

Creating Innovation in the Business Sector

Second Panel Session

The panelists will discuss their companies’ commitment to addressing climate change and climate justice. They will highlight recent initiatives in investment, renewable energy, transportation and technology, at the local, national and global levels. Opportunities for community involvement with private sector innovation will be highlighted.
