Biology

Project Description:

Currently, in my Data-Intensive Ecology class, my 13 students are working on their semester-long research projects that focus on topics such as biodiversity and timing of behavior in biology systems  (phenology). Due to the nature of the data sets that the students have chosen to analyze for their research projects, many of their projects focus specifically on how climate change and human activities impact the natural world. For example, one project looks at how changes in spring temperatures impacts bird migration patterns, while another is exploring how fires and fire severity impact soil microbial communities. Other projects seek to better understand how differences in land use in different urban areas impacts biodiversity in a number of different animals and plants. Students are using R and Python to complete their analyses, while also practicing how to visually present their findings to both a scientific audience and to a larger community. As part of their assignments, students are expected to present their findings to the broader ASC community.
